How Careflow's Veterinary Drug Dosage Calculator Works

A free, public tool for calculating weight-based drug dosages for common veterinary medications — and why we built it.

Overview

A straightforward tool for a common workflow.

The Veterinary Drug Dosage Calculator is a free, publicly available web tool built by Careflow Animal Health. It allows veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and students to calculate weight-based dosages for eight common veterinary medications by entering a patient's weight and selecting a species.

The calculator is accessible at no cost — no account, no login, no download required. It runs entirely in the browser and provides instant results.

You can try it directly on our Drug Dosage Calculator page.

How It Works

Three inputs. Instant results.

1

Enter the patient weight

The user enters the patient's body weight. The calculator accepts both kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb). If pounds are entered, the tool converts them to kilograms by dividing by 2.2046 — the standard conversion factor used in veterinary pharmacology.

2

Select the species

The user selects either "Dog" or "Cat." The calculator then filters the medication list to show only medications appropriate for the selected species. Some medications are species-specific — for example, Carprofen and Meloxicam are shown only for dogs. Feline meloxicam dosing is intentionally excluded because repeated use carries a U.S. boxed warning; clinicians must verify the current product label and patient-specific plan.

3

Review calculated dosages

The calculator multiplies the patient's weight in kilograms by each medication's species-appropriate dose (expressed in mg/kg) to produce the total dose in milligrams. For medications with a maximum dose cap — such as Famotidine (20 mg) — the calculator caps the result and indicates when the cap has been applied.

Medications Covered

Eight common veterinary medications.

MedicationCommon UseSpecies
Meloxicam (Metacam)NSAID for pain and inflammationDogs only
Carprofen (Rimadyl)NSAID for canine pain managementDogs
GabapentinNeuropathic pain and seizure managementDogs, Cats
Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (Clavamox)Broad-spectrum antibioticDogs, Cats
PrednisoloneAnti-inflammatory corticosteroidDogs, Cats
TramadolOpioid analgesic for pain managementDogs, Cats
CephalexinFirst-generation cephalosporin antibioticDogs, Cats
Famotidine (Pepcid)H2 blocker for gastric acid reductionDogs, Cats

Each medication entry also includes the route of administration (e.g., PO/oral), dosing frequency, and clinical notes — such as monitoring requirements, contraindications, and special precautions.

Limitations

What this tool is — and what it isn't.

The calculator is an educational reference tool. It is not a substitute for clinical judgment or a veterinary formulary. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • It covers eight medications only. It is not a comprehensive formulary.
  • It supports dogs and cats. It does not currently include dosing for other species.
  • It uses standard published dosages (mg/kg). Individual patient factors — renal function, liver function, concurrent medications, age, and species-specific metabolism — may require dose adjustments that this tool cannot account for.
  • It does not replace the manufacturer's product label or current veterinary formulary references.
  • It is not medical advice. All dosages should be verified by a licensed veterinarian before administration.
Why We Built It

A practical tool from a practice management platform.

Careflow Animal Health is a veterinary practice management platform that includes scheduling, billing, telemedicine, client portal, prescription management, and AI-assisted SOAP note generation. Weight-based dosing is a routine part of daily veterinary practice — and it's a calculation that should be fast, transparent, and easy to verify.

We built the calculator as a free public tool for three reasons:

  1. 1.
    Utility for the profession

Veterinarians and technicians perform weight-based dosing calculations multiple times per day. A fast, no-login tool saves time and reduces the chance of arithmetic errors.

  2. 2.
    Transparency

The calculator shows the dose rate (mg/kg), the calculated dose, and any maximum dose cap. This makes the math verifiable — you can see exactly how the result was derived, rather than trusting a black box.

  3. 3.
    Connection to the platform

Within the full Careflow platform, dosing calculations are integrated into the clinical workflow through the Clinical Intelligence Engine and prescription management tools. The free calculator demonstrates the underlying approach — transparent, species-aware, and weight-based — in a standalone format.
